Lorraine Glessner- Encaustic Embellishment Extravaganza with Lorraine Glessner

This workshop focuses on the creation of intricate patterns, expressive personal surfaces and
complex, multi-layered pieces utilizing and in combination with encaustic painting techniques.
With an emphasis on mixed media, methods and materials covered in this workshop include the
use of organic and geometric form, realistic and abstract imagery, Rust and compost printing,
patterned collage, photo transfer, stencils, candy molds, embossing foils, and branding (creating
marks with heated metal and wood-burning tools). Considerations such as using patterns and
repetition as the content itself, to tell a story, support and/or strengthen the message is also
discussed.

STUDENT SUPPLY LIST: Students should bring the following materials with them:
sharp scissors
Collage materials (magazine images, photos, thread, fabric, etc)
mixed media sketchbook and drawing media of your choice
Any small sharp-ended tool for incising/writing/drawing into the wax
Closed toe shoes for safety
2-4 wooden painting panels or Encausticboard (your preference of 8x8 or 10x10, but no larger or
smaller, please.) If purchasing wooden panels, it’s your preference if you want to add encaustic
gesso, but nothing coated in acrylic or acrylic gesso!! Please leave at least one wooden board not
coated in gesso.
2-3 natural hair brushes in various sizes for encaustic painting. Hake brushes are recommended,
please keep brush sizes from 1”-2.5” width. One brush will be designated your medium brush, so
must be free of color if you are bringing used brushes.
1 yard RTD silk habotai (8-12mm) or good quality cotton fabric
OPTIONAL MATERIALS
any tool or material for any technique that you normally employ while working with encaustic.
basic encaustic colors will be provided, however, if you prefer certain colors, please bring them.
decorative stencils, mesh, doilies, etc-anything flat with open areas that can be used as a stencil.
smock (optional)
Heat gun or embossing tool only if you have one
